Ukraine and US to Hold Talks March 21, Aiming for Broader Negotiations
Bilateral Ukraine-US Talks Scheduled
According to Главком: A Ukrainian delegation is en route to the United States for talks with American officials on March 21. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, these bilateral discussions are intended to lay the groundwork for a potential three-way meeting that would also include Russia. However, the Russian side has so far shown no willingness to travel to the US for such talks. These diplomatic efforts come at a critical juncture in the ongoing conflict.
The Ukrainian negotiating team, which includes Serhiy Kyslytsia, is already traveling. President Zelenskyy noted that while the political will for a broader process is currently lacking, the Ukrainian group is proceeding with discussions with their American counterparts. He emphasized that the negotiation pause has lasted long enough and it is time to conclude it, with Ukraine doing everything to ensure any future talks are substantive.
External Factors Influencing the Negotiations
Zelenskyy also highlighted that the situation in the Middle East is impacting the scheduling of the proposed trilateral meeting.
"Everyone understands that the war in the Middle East affects the postponement of this date. The trilateral meeting has been rescheduled more than once; we want more specifics,"
he stated. He further added,
"There has been a pause in negotiations; it is time to end it. And we are doing everything to ensure the talks are truly meaningful."
The President stressed that the Ukrainian team, comprising the political part of the negotiation group, is already on its way.
"Today we discussed the negotiations in detail with [Rustem] Umerov, and with Kyrylo Budanov, and with David Arakhamia,"
he said.
"Our priority is to do everything for the possibility of a dignified peace."
The upcoming talks between Ukraine and the United States hold strategic importance, as they could shape future actions within the context of international policy, particularly concerning relations with Russia. The Ukrainian delegation seeks to reinvigorate the diplomatic process, despite the apparent lack of readiness from the Russian side to participate. As Zelenskyy indicated, the situation in the Middle East remains a significant external factor that could substantially influence the dynamics and outcomes of these negotiations.
As the Ukrainian delegation prepares for crucial discussions with US officials, the potential for a trilateral meeting involving Russia remains uncertain. Understanding the dynamics at play is essential, especially with the ongoing impact of the Middle East conflict on these negotiations.
