UK and Ukraine Forge Partnership to Strengthen Community Social Services

Meeting with a UK Delegation

According to Міністерство соц. політики: Ukraine's First Deputy Minister for Social Policy, Family, and National Unity, Lyudmyla Shemelynets, met with a delegation from the United Kingdom to discuss enhancing community-based social services and implementing the SPIRIT program. The delegation included representatives from the British Embassy in Ukraine and the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). This collaboration occurs as Ukraine continues to reform its social safety net amidst ongoing challenges.

During their visit, the delegation toured a comprehensive rehabilitation center for children and youth with disabilities, including an early intervention unit currently serving 20 families. The SPIRIT program is being implemented in partnership with the UK government, the World Bank, and UNICEF, highlighting significant international backing for the development of Ukraine's social services sector.

Lyudmyla Shemelynets stressed the critical need to integrate new solutions into the social protection framework, stating: 'It is vital for us that the solutions we are piloting today become standard practice in our communities. This is how a resilient social protection system is built.'

This approach focuses on developing local community services, expanding the range of service providers, and shifting towards a model where support is tailored to individual needs.

The Significance of International Support

The meeting marks a key step in fortifying Ukraine's social protection infrastructure, particularly in the context of the SPIRIT program, which aims to integrate international expertise into domestic social services. Support from the United Kingdom and other international organizations is poised to significantly improve the accessibility and quality of social services for vulnerable groups, especially children and young people with disabilities.
