Attack on the Yaroslavl Oil Refinery

According to ХВИЛЯ: In the early hours of May 22, Ukrainian defense forces launched an attack on an oil refinery in Yaroslavl, a city roughly 700 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported the use of long-range drones in this operation.

Since the start of 2026, the Russian army has suffered substantial losses exceeding 145,000 personnel. Specifically, nearly 86,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, while at least 59,000 have sustained severe injuries. Additionally, over 800 Russian troops have been taken prisoner.

Strategy of Ukrainian Defense Forces

Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukrainian forces continue to strike designated targets in temporarily occupied territories.

“We are bringing the war home, to Russia, and that is entirely fair,” he underscored.

The president also expressed gratitude to every Ukrainian unit achieving results, highlighting drone operators for their precision, as well as paratroopers and assault troops for their active operations.

It is noted that further long-range strikes are expected in response to Russian shelling, demonstrating the readiness of Ukrainian defense forces to continue the fight.

The attack on the Yaroslavl oil refinery is part of Ukraine's broader strategy to expand the combat front and reduce Russia's military capabilities deep in its rear. The use of long-range drones underscores the technological advancements of Ukrainian defense forces, enabling them to carry out missions at great distances. These actions could impact Russian troop morale and increase pressure on Russia's political leadership, potentially forcing a reassessment of its war strategy. For an English-speaking audience, this event highlights Ukraine's growing ability to project power far beyond its borders, a key development in the ongoing conflict.

The recent strike on the Yaroslavl oil refinery is not an isolated incident; it reflects a broader trend in Ukraine's military strategy. In a similar operation, President Zelenskyy recently shared video footage of a strike on another refinery located 800 km from Ukraine’s border, highlighting the effectiveness of long-range drone capabilities. This ongoing campaign aims to disrupt Russian supply lines and weaken their operational capacity, signaling a significant escalation in the conflict.
