Operation Targets Russia's Shadow Fleet

According to Главком: Ukraine's defense forces have struck two vessels belonging to Russia's shadow fleet in the waters off the port of Novorossiysk. These ships were reportedly used to illegally export oil in violation of international sanctions. The operation was jointly conducted by multiple branches of the military and intelligence services, under the direction of Chief of the General Staff Andriy Hnatov.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the mission's success, stating:

“These tankers were actively used to transport oil. Now they won't be.”

On the night of May 3, 2026, drones also attacked the Leningrad region, where residents of several cities reported hearing drones and explosions. A fire broke out in the area following the attack.

Expanding Ukraine's Long-Range Capabilities

In his address, the president emphasized the importance of developing Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities, saying:

“Ukraine's long-range capability will be comprehensively developed-at sea, in the sky, and on land.”

These events highlight Ukraine's intensifying efforts to counter Russian aggression and continue strengthening the country's defensive posture.

This operation marks a significant step in Ukraine's broader strategy to bolster its defense capabilities and undermine the economic foundations of Russia's war effort. By targeting vessels involved in illicit oil exports, Ukraine aims to disrupt a key revenue stream that funds the Russian military. The growing frequency of strikes across multiple domains-including air attacks-signals a tactical shift and a more strategic approach to Ukraine's wartime operations. For an English-speaking audience, it is important to note that these actions reflect Ukraine's increasing ability to project power far beyond its borders, challenging Russia's logistical and economic networks.

As Ukraine intensifies its military operations, the recent strikes on vessels are part of a larger strategy to target critical infrastructure and undermine Russian military capabilities. This follows previous successful operations, including the recent hits on Russian refineries and military depots, which further illustrate Ukraine's commitment to disrupting enemy supply lines.
