Olha Sopit Clinches European Title in Antony

According to Главком: Ukraine's foil fencer Olha Sopit has been crowned European champion, defeating Italy's Arianna Errigo 15-8 in the final held in Antony, France. This marks Sopit's first medal at a senior European Championship and the second award for the Ukrainian national team at this tournament.

Road to Victory

During the group stage, Sopit showcased steady performance, winning four out of six bouts. In the round of 32, she overcame opponents from Austria and Poland. The quarterfinal proved dramatic as she edged out Daria Myroniuk 12-11, securing victory on priority during the extra minute. Sopit then dominated the semifinal, defeating Spain's Maria Marino 15-8 with ease.

At 23 years old, Sopit hails from Kyiv. Her opponent Errigo is an Olympic champion and multiple world and European titleholder. This win is particularly significant as Sopit broke Errigo's streak of victories over Ukrainian fencers in continental finals-just a year earlier in Basel, Errigo had beaten Daria Myroniuk 15-10.

Sopit's achievement boosts the Ukrainian squad, which fielded 24 fencers across 12 events. Alina Komashchuk had earlier secured the team's first bronze in the women's sabre individual competition.

This victory underscores the rise of Ukrainian fencing on the international stage. Beyond being a personal triumph, it reflects the high level of training and competitiveness within the national team. Given Ukraine's long-standing fencing traditions, such results could further develop the sport domestically and attract new talent to the discipline.

As the Ukrainian fencing team continues to shine on the European stage, Komashchuk's recent bronze medal in the women's sabre individual competition highlights the nation's growing prowess in this sport. This achievement not only complements Sopit's victory but also reflects the strength and depth of talent within the Ukrainian fencing community.
