Common Scams on Spanish Roads

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Polina, a Ukrainian woman who has been residing in Spain for several years, has revealed crucial insights about fraudulent schemes that drivers and tourists often face on the roads connecting Valencia and Barcelona, as well as near popular beach areas. She warns that these locations are hotspots for scammers employing various deceptive tactics.

One prevalent trick involves scammers signaling drivers to stop by falsely indicating a car problem. When the vehicle halts, one scammer distracts the driver while an accomplice steals from the car. Polina emphasized that

“many Ukrainians have fallen victim to this scam”

. Another common fraud involves strangers offering to guide drivers to so-called secret parking spots near beaches. In reality, these parking areas are free, but the scammers demand several euros for access. Refusing to pay can result in vandalism, such as nails scratching the car’s paint. Polina shared:

“We know people who never pay and have no issues. But some who couldn’t or wouldn’t pay ended up with their cars scratched all over with nails”

.

Polina’s Life and Experiences in Spain

Polina currently lives in a modern apartment complex featuring a pool and gym, yet her experience in Spain isn’t without challenges. Recently, city authorities started relocating homeless individuals from Turia Park, leading them to settle near her windows. Additionally, Polina has spent three years living in Germany, which has given her firsthand understanding of cultural differences Ukrainians encounter abroad, especially regarding daily life and regulations.

  • In Germany, most stores remain closed on Sundays.
  • Pharmacies close earlier than they do in Ukraine.
  • Strict waste sorting schedules dictate exact days and times for garbage disposal.

Polina’s experiences highlight the importance of vigilance and awareness for Ukrainians living abroad, especially in countries where scams are common in tourist-heavy areas like Spain. Her insights serve as a valuable guide for those planning to live outside Ukraine long-term, helping them navigate cultural and societal differences while staying safe.
