According to Федерація Легкої Атлетики: The continental track and field showcase opened in Birmingham on August 10, and Ukraine’s first day brought a mix of results. Oleksandr Pohorilko was the first Ukrainian to race, finishing 20th in 46.55 seconds and missing the cut.

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Viktoriya Tkachuk ran 55.60 seconds to place fourth in her heat and fourth overall after the opening round. Alina Kyshkina, making her European Championship debut, crossed in 56.12 seconds for third in her heat and ninth overall. Both Ukrainian hurdlers advanced to the semifinals.

Day One Results in Birmingham

Mykhaylo Kokhan delivered a confident hammer throw performance, reaching 74.22m on his first attempt and then improving to 77.40m on his second, which secured his place in the final. Iryna Klymets was due to compete in the hammer qualifying round at 22:38 later that day.

Ukraine’s opening day at these championships highlighted the squad’s range: Pohorilko fell short, but Tkachuk and Kyshkina showed promise by reaching the semifinals. Kokhan’s qualification keeps him in medal contention and underlines the strength of the hammer field. Ukrainian fans can expect plenty more drama in the days ahead.
