Marta Kostyuk Reaches Roland Garros Quarterfinals for the First Time in Her Career
Kostyuk Stuns Iga Swiatek in Straight Sets at Roland Garros
According to Главком: Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk claimed a commanding straight-sets victory (7:5, 6:1) over Poland’s Iga Swiatek, advancing to the quarterfinals of the French Open for the first time. The win marks a major milestone for Kostyuk, who had previously lost all four of her meetings with Swiatek without winning a single set. Swiatek, a four-time Roland Garros champion, was unable to counter the Ukrainian’s aggressive play during the match.
Upcoming Opponent and Kostyuk’s Emotional Response
Kostyuk will next face the winner of the match between Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic. Reflecting on her breakthrough performance, Kostyuk shared her feelings:
'I’m still in shock. To beat such an incredible player, someone who has won here four times-it’s unbelievable. Especially since I lost to her four times before and never even took a set. This is just incredible. I still can’t believe it.'
Kostyuk also emphasized her focus on enjoying the game:
'I want to keep having fun. I try not to think about winning or losing at all. I don’t play tennis to win. I play because I love it. I want to feel connected to the fans, absorb the energy from the stands, and make people happy.'
Other Ukrainian players did not achieve similar success at the tournament:
- Daria Snigur was eliminated in the second round, losing to American Peyton Stearns in straight sets.
- Anhelina Kalinina also exited after the first round, falling to French player Diane Parry despite winning the first set 6–0, as she could not maintain her lead in the following two sets.
Kostyuk’s victory not only highlights her rising level of play but also signals a shift in the tennis landscape, as Ukrainian athletes are increasingly proving competitive on the international stage. Defeating Swiatek, currently one of the world’s top players, could serve as a pivotal moment in Kostyuk’s career and boost her confidence in future matches. At the same time, the results of other Ukrainian players at the tournament suggest there is still work to be done to achieve sustained success at the highest level of tennis.
Following her stunning victory at Roland Garros, Kostyuk's rise in the rankings has been remarkable. Just recently, she secured a place in the WTA Top 15 after her triumph in Madrid, showcasing her impressive journey and the growing strength of Ukrainian tennis on the global stage.
