Free Emergency Volunteering Course Launched by Ukrainian Volunteer Service and Brave Rebuilders Foundation

Free course on emergency volunteering
Нові можливості для волонтерів: запущено безкоштовний курс для тих, хто прагне допомагати в надзвичайних ситуаціях.

About the 'Response Point' Program

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The Ukrainian Volunteer Service (UVS), together with the charitable organization Brave Rebuilders Foundation, has introduced a free online course titled 'Response Point.' This program is designed to provide foundational knowledge of emergency volunteering, equipping participants to assist safely and effectively during crisis situations.

No prior volunteer experience is required to enroll, and the course is intended for adults. It takes approximately one hour to complete, after which participants receive a certificate. The training is hosted on the Volunteer Platform available at platforma.volunteer.country. The course development was supported by the Askold and Dir Foundation, managed by ISAR Ednannia as part of the project 'A Strong Civil Society of Ukraine-Driving Reforms and Democracy,' funded by Norway and Sweden.

Course Impact and Significance

Since its recent launch, 30 individuals have already started the training. Graduates become eligible to join the UVS emergency volunteer registry, which is activated exclusively for urgent needs arising from crisis response efforts. Volunteers receive notifications about immediate requests via SMS. UVS encourages organizations to engage volunteers ahead of time through the Volunteer Platform.

“Preparing before a crisis hits is far more effective than starting from scratch during one. That was the inspiration behind the ‘Response Point’ course-to provide people with essential emergency volunteering skills and to build a pool of trained volunteers that organizations and local initiatives can rely on when needed.”

Alina Shatsilo, UVS representative

The curriculum covers key topics including:

  • The roles and responsibilities of volunteers,
  • Ways to contribute effectively,
  • The importance of working through coordinators,
  • Collaboration with emergency services.

“We want volunteers to understand that responsible volunteering isn’t about reckless heroism, but about providing help without creating additional risks,” Shatsilo emphasized.

She also noted that while the course doesn’t guarantee readiness for every type of crisis, it offers essential knowledge that helps individuals recognize their limits and learn how to participate responsibly. “This is a crucial first step toward being better prepared for situations where our support may be needed,” Shatsilo concluded.

The launch of 'Response Point' reflects a growing demand for properly trained volunteers in Ukraine’s evolving emergency landscape. Beyond teaching basic skills, the course promotes a mindful approach to volunteering that reduces potential hazards during aid delivery. Expanding the network of trained responders will significantly enhance the efficiency of crisis management efforts in the country.

In addition to the 'Response Point' course, individuals interested in enhancing their skills can explore another valuable opportunity: a free online course focused on organizational development for civil society organizations. This program offers essential training that complements emergency volunteering by equipping participants with knowledge crucial for effective organizational management during crises.
