Ukraine's 2026 Winter Olympic Campaign Underway: Early Standings and Performances

According to Главком: Ukrainian competitors entered the medal fray at the 2026 Winter Olympics on February 7, taking part in events across freestyle skiing (slopestyle), luge, alpine skiing (downhill), and cross-country skiing (skiathlon). The nation's strongest early showings came in the luge and alpine skiing disciplines. These Games are a significant global stage for Ukrainian athletes, who continue to compete with resilience and determination.

Freestyle skier Kateryna Kotsar made history as the first Ukrainian to compete in Olympic slopestyle and big air. In her slopestyle qualification run, she scored 36.03 points, placing 14th-a landmark moment for Ukraine's freestyle skiing program.

Ukrainian lugers demonstrated tight competition in their respective fields:

  • Anton Dukach holds 12th place after two runs;
  • Andrii Mandzii is in 14th place;
  • In the women's luge training sessions, Yulianna Tunytska placed 11th;
  • Olena Smaha finished 12th.

These positions indicate the team's competitiveness in the sport.

Dmytro Shepiiuk opened Ukraine's alpine skiing campaign, finishing 33rd in the men's downhill, marking the team's first step in the discipline at these Games.

In cross-country skiing, all Ukrainian women competing in the 20km skiathlon were lapped and removed from the race. Anastasiia Nikon posted the best result among them, finishing in 61st place.

The second day of Olympic competition begins on February 8, 2026, where Ukrainian athletes will aim to improve their standings and contend for medals in upcoming events.

The opening of Olympic competition proved a significant phase for Team Ukraine, highlighted by promising starts in luge and alpine skiing. While these initial results reveal the athletes' potential, challenges remain, particularly in cross-country. The coming days promise intense competition as the team strives to refine performances and reach the podium.
