The role of drones in modern warfare

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian forces are increasingly deploying long-range drones equipped with artificial intelligence to target Russian logistics, causing a fuel crisis on the Crimean peninsula. In May alone, attacks on fuel tankers surged by 40% compared to the previous month. The number of destroyed air defense launchers more than doubled, highlighting the growing effectiveness of these Ukrainian operations.

Starting May 21, the occupation authorities were forced to restrict truck traffic in an effort to mitigate the impact of the strikes. These Ukrainian drones can engage targets up to 150 kilometers beyond the front line, using autonomous targeting systems. Additionally, they connect to the Starlink network, which enhances their operational capabilities.

Drone warfare and shifting tactics

For the past two years, drone warfare along the 1,300-kilometer front line had reached a stalemate. However, Ukrainian forces are now ramping up their activities. On Thursday, for instance, drones struck four bridges in occupied territories. Meanwhile, Russian long-range drones have extended their range to 70 kilometers, but their payload capacity drops significantly beyond 15 kilometers.

Ukraine’s military has ordered five times more long-range drones than in 2025. The Ministry of Defense has also mandated the use of a single software platform across all combat units, aiming to improve coordination.

“We are launching a 'logistical lockdown' for the Russian army,” said Mykhailo Fedorov.

Military expert George Barros emphasized the need to cripple Russian logistics deep behind the lines to complicate conditions for Russian troops. He noted that “the Russians will find a way to neutralize Ukraine’s advantage within six months.” Mykola Bielieskov also warned that premature euphoria can be as dangerous as total pessimism. Anatoliy Khrapchynskyi observed that Ukrainian forces are successfully striking Russian command posts, forcing them to withdraw from hazardous areas.

This new drone strategy, driven by advanced technology, represents a shift in combat approaches and opens up fresh opportunities for the Ukrainian military.

The use of AI-powered drones in Ukraine underscores the critical role of technological innovation in contemporary armed conflict. By focusing on destroying the enemy’s supply lines, these efforts can significantly impact combat effectiveness and resource availability. In turn, these actions may shape the future strategies of both sides, as technological advantages become decisive in determining the outcomes of military operations.

The ongoing developments in drone warfare are not isolated incidents. As Ukrainian forces systematically target Russian supply lines, the strategic impact on logistics in the southern regions is becoming increasingly evident. This shift in tactics not only disrupts enemy operations but also underscores the evolving nature of modern combat, where technology plays a pivotal role in shaping the battlefield landscape.
