Ukrainian Illustrators Shine at World Illustration Awards 2026

Winkler won in the Professional Animation category, while Kovtun took home the prize for Professional Book Covers. The competition attracted over 4,500 entries from 83 countries, with judges narrowing the field to 446 longlisted and 200 shortlisted works, highlighting the event’s intense competition and diverse creative talent.

Profiles of the Award Winners

Margarita Winkler’s award recognized her animated short film Dreamtracks, completed in spring 2025. She describes the film as "a love letter to train travel across Ukraine, born from a profound homesickness and an attempt to capture the dreamy feeling of being suspended between destinations." Winkler earned her Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2025. In 2023, she was awarded a Fulbright grant for her graduate studies in the United States and currently resides in Vancouver, Canada.

Alina Kovtun, an illustrator and designer based in Kyiv, received the award for her alternative cover design of Mona Awad’s novel Bunny. Kovtun explained that the book’s unsettling mood, dark humor, and blurred lines between reality and imagination inspired her to explore surreal and symbolic visual themes.

Founded in 1976 by the British Association of Illustrators alongside the Directory of Illustration, the World Illustration Awards is considered one of the most esteemed international honors in the field. The competition welcomes submissions from both established professionals and emerging artists. This year, 12 Ukrainian illustrators and artists of Ukrainian descent made the longlist. Clinton Campbell, co-founder and director of the Muti studio and a member of the 2026 judging panel, praised the broad range of talent on display, saying, "I really enjoyed being a judge. It’s amazing to see the incredible diversity of talent within the illustration community."

The recognition of Margarita Winkler and Alina Kovtun on the global stage highlights the growing influence of Ukrainian artists in the international cultural arena. Their success not only reflects the high level of skill and originality among Ukrainian illustrators but also serves as a catalyst for further development of the creative industries in Ukraine.
