How Ukraine's MiG-29 and F-16 Fighters Counter Missiles and Drones
Ukrainian Pilots Detail Air Defense Tactics Against Missiles and Drones
According to Главком: Ukrainian fighter jets serve as the first line of defense in the nation's air shield, engaging hostile threats before they reach other systems. This integrated air defense network combines MiG-29 fighters with mobile fire teams, interceptor drones, and missile systems like the British Raven, Buk launchers with adapted RIM-7 missiles, and Gepard anti-aircraft guns. This multi-layered approach is crucial for countering the diverse range of aerial threats, including drones, that Ukraine faces daily.
Pilots flying the Soviet-era MiG-29s describe their role as the initial barrier. One pilot explained:
“Typically, aviation is the first wall. We meet everyone. We filter out about half of the targets that come through our sector.”
However, aging technology presents a significant hurdle.
“The reason why aviation can't engage many targets is the aging of the targeting system. Ours is Doppler-based and works from speed,”
noted a MiG-29 pilot, highlighting difficulties with interception.
In contrast, the incoming F-16 fighters are expected to be far more effective against drone swarms. One pilot stated that if an F-16 is scrambled, “it will definitely use all its ammunition – hitting a minimum of 6-7 targets.” For MiG-29 pilots, intercepting 2-3 targets is already considered a successful mission. As of 2023, Ukrainian pilots have mastered the use of R-73 and R-27 missiles, enhancing their combat readiness. The arrival of Western F-16s is anticipated to significantly boost Ukraine's air defense capabilities against these persistent threats.
At the start of the full-scale invasion, intercepting slow-flying 'Shahed' drones was a major challenge for Ukrainian forces. Pilots now note that these jet-powered 'Shaheds' have become routine targets, demonstrating the adaptation and improved combat skills of Ukrainian aviation in response to evolving enemy tactics. Thus, Ukraine's combat aviation continues to play a vital role in defending the country's airspace, proving its resilience in modern warfare.
The Critical Importance of Ukrainian Aviation's Effectiveness
Given the escalating aerial threat, the effectiveness of Ukrainian aviation in air defense is critically important for national security. The coordination between different elements of the air defense network, including advanced fighters and anti-aircraft systems, underscores the necessity of a comprehensive approach to protecting airspace. In an environment where the enemy constantly adapts its methods, the ability of Ukrainian pilots to rapidly respond to new challenges is decisive for success on the modern battlefield.
