Науковці України досягли прориву, виготовивши сперматозоїди з клітин кісткового мозку: нові можливості для медицини.

A new achievement in reproductive medicine

Ukrainian scientists have for the first time obtained human sperm from bone marrow stem cells. This was reported by the head of the embryology and biotechnology department at I.D. Clinic, PhD Yury Lesniak.

'With joint efforts, our scientific team on November 18, 2023, first obtained human sperm from mesenchymal stem cells of the bone marrow. These cells were isolated according to a specially developed protocol by us,' said Lesniak.

According to him, the process involved stimulating the appearance of mesenchymal bone marrow cells in the blood of patients, after which laboratory processing was conducted. Sperm were created from these cells using patented methods.

'These sperm were used for fertilization of human egg cells, resulting in embryos. We presented this achievement of the Ukrainian team led by Islam Mukhamedovich Aldabasek at the International Congress on Reproductive Medicine in May 2024,' explained Lesniak.

Currently, this new technique is undergoing testing and is being prepared for clinical research with the aim of further implementation in medical practice for the treatment of male infertility. According to data from the beginning of 2025, over 3,000 families have benefited from the assisted reproductive technologies (ART) program, of which 800 women have already conceived.

Ukrainian scientists were able to create human sperm from bone marrow stem cells, which opens new prospects for the treatment of male infertility. This achievement has reflected in successful fertilizations of egg cells using the obtained sperm, marking a step forward in the development of reproductive medicine.
