According to Главком: According to the Institute for the Study of War, Ukrainian military units have advanced in key areas of the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions, despite ongoing Russian assaults. On January 15, Ukrainian forces were reported to have conducted successful operations north of Kupiansk in Kharkiv Oblast.

Russian troops, however, launched attacks on Kupiansk and its surrounding areas on January 16-17. Undeterred, Ukrainian forces managed to advance northwest of the village of Svitlie in Donetsk Oblast on January 17.
