Oleksii Pod's Triumph at an International Competition

According to Главком: A sculptor from the Poltava region, Oleksii Pod, claimed first place at the International Sand Sculpture Contest held in Latvia, which was themed around the Jurassic period. His entry, shaped like a LEGO set featuring a boy-inspired by a photo of his son-serves as a symbol of Ukraine's post-war reconstruction. His main rival at the event was Latvian artist Karlis Ile.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Oleksii Pod, especially after finishing second in the same competition last year. It is his first-ever win in a sand sculpture contest. With this piece, he aimed to craft something truly memorable.

“I figured everyone would go for realistic dinosaurs, so I wanted to create something original,” he explained.

The project posed a unique challenge due to its need for precise straight lines.

“The real test was making sure each separate block had a more or less uniform shape,” Pod noted.

Contest Conditions and the Work's Symbolism

Throughout the competition, Pod had to contend with rainy weather, which complicated the sculpting process. “It rained, so I had to cover the piece and wrap it in plastic. But we got through it without any major issues,” he said. To strengthen the sculpture, a special adhesive solution was used, allowing the artwork to remain standing for an extended period.

“A sculpture has to be 100% thought out from the very start. You can't fix anything afterward,” Pod emphasized.

Overall, Oleksii Pod views his creation as more than just an artistic work-it is a symbol of recovery. “I also drew a parallel to Ukraine. After the war, we will rebuild everything, just like this boy rebuilds his dinosaur.” This success marks an important milestone for the sculptor, demonstrating how art can serve as a source of inspiration and hope for a nation during difficult times.

Pod's victory at this international competition highlights not only his individual talent but also the power of art in the context of Ukraine's post-war renewal. The rebuilding symbolism woven into his piece may inspire many who seek to restore peace and stability in their homeland. It also shows that Ukrainian artists can secure a prominent place on the global stage, sharing their ideas and cultural values with an international audience.
