Mykhailo Larkov Claims World Junior Snooker Crown

According to Главком: Ukrainian snooker player Mykhailo Larkov has won the 2026 World Junior Snooker Championship in Sofia, earning a two-year card to compete on the professional World Snooker Tour. The 17-year-old secured the title on January 23rd, defeating China's Wang Xinbo 5-2 in the final. Snooker, a cue sport with a strong professional circuit in the UK and Asia, sees this victory as a significant breakthrough for Ukrainian talent.

The Path to Victory

Larkov demonstrated impressive form throughout the tournament. In the group stage, he won three of his four matches, securing three 3-0 victories. He then edged out Scotland's Ayaan Iqbal 4-3 in a knockout match. His strong performance continued with wins over players from China and Thailand in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

In the final, Larkov started with a 67-point break and built a commanding 4-1 lead. He sealed the match with a 60-point break, a fitting end to his dominant run. This win grants him professional status, making him only the third Ukrainian professional snooker player in history, following Julian Boyko and Anton Kazakov.

The broader 2026 World Snooker Championship was also historic. China's Zhao Xintong became world champion by defeating Wales's Mark Williams 18-12. Zhao is the first Chinese player and the first amateur-having come through four qualifying rounds-to win the sport's ultimate title.

Mykhailo Larkov's junior world championship win highlights the rising potential of Ukrainian snooker on the international stage.

Larkov's success could boost the sport's development in Ukraine, attracting new young athletes and increasing domestic interest. Given this victory and other achievements by Ukrainian players, the nation's snooker scene shows positive momentum. These events may also stimulate investment in infrastructure and training programs for young talents in the discipline.
