Ukrzaliznytsia wants to raise ticket prices: how will this affect passengers
According to glavcom.ua: The largest railway carrier in the country – 'Ukrzaliznytsia' – is considering implementing a new pricing system for tickets. The idea is to cover losses from passenger transportation by dynamically increasing ticket prices. The head of the company, Oleksandr Pert sovskyi, noted that without additional financing, 'Ukrzaliznytsia' may lack 20 billion hryvnias to cover expenses.
Dynamically adjusted pricing and other proposals
“We support the president and the government in this issue, but we believe that it is possible to already resort to certain liberalization today. For example, to implement dynamic pricing, when tickets sold in the last minutes before departure are sold at a higher price,” – Pert sovskyi noted.
“Today, Ukrzaliznytsia needs systemic state support and financing,” – he added.
It was emphasized that tariffs for passenger transportation have remained unchanged since 2021, while for cargo – since 2022. Domestic transportation brings about 6-7 billion hryvnias a year, while revenues from international communications amount to about 4 billion hryvnias.
The report noted that losses from passenger transportation last year exceeded 18 billion hryvnias, and the director of the Center for Transport Strategies, Serhii Vovk, called on the government to allocate funds for compensating losses in the budget.
The company 'Ukrzaliznytsia' is considering the possibility of implementing dynamic pricing for passenger transportation to compensate for losses that reached significant amounts last year. The new pricing system may affect ticket prices, particularly in the last minutes before the train departs.
