Train Services Suspended Due to Escalating Security Risks

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Starting October 20, 2026, Ukrzaliznytsia will discontinue two key train routes heading east, citing worsening security conditions. The affected services include trains № 79/80 operating between Dnipro and Lviv, and № 31/32 running from Zaporizhzhia to Przemyśl. This decision follows a marked decline in passenger numbers linked directly to the deteriorating safety environment.

Passengers traveling from Dnipro to Lviv are encouraged to use alternative trains, which include:

  • Trains № 39/40
  • Trains № 5/6
  • Trains № 3/4
  • Trains № 85/86
  • Trains № 41/42
  • Trains № 61/62
  • Trains № 261/262
  • Trains № 127/128

For journeys towards Przemyśl, travelers can arrange connections via Lviv or Kyiv.

Cancellation of Kyiv-Sumy Train Service

Additionally, passenger trains between Kyiv and Sumy have been suspended since October 1, 2026. Travelers intending to reach Sumy are advised to travel as far as Konotop instead. Notably, in September 2026, multiple attacks targeted railway services, including one day when three passenger trains were assaulted. These incidents resulted in casualties and injuries, as well as widespread delays across the network. For instance, on the night of September 21, over 50 trains experienced delays, with some exceeding 16 hours.

These train cancellations highlight the significant impact of the current security challenges facing Ukraine's railway system. The surge in attacks and the resulting drop in passenger traffic have compelled Ukrzaliznytsia to reevaluate routes and prioritize traveler safety. This situation underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to safeguard railway operations and restore public confidence in train travel.

As Ukrzaliznytsia grapples with escalating security threats, the situation has led to significant operational changes across the railway network. In light of these challenges, recently implemented safety protocols aim to address the rising number of delays and ensure the safety of passengers. These measures reflect the urgent need for improved security in Ukrainian rail travel.
