From September 15, Ukrzaliznytsia Rolls Out Six-Zone Fare Structure for Suburban Rail Travel
Ukrzaliznytsia Introduces a New Fare System for Suburban Routes
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Starting September 15, Ukrzaliznytsia will implement a six-zone fare system for suburban train services, offering fixed ticket prices based on travel distance within designated zones. This change will first affect Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Zhytomyr regions, with Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, and Cherkasy regions following on September 22. The plan is to gradually extend this system across other areas of Ukraine.
Under this new pricing scheme, fares will be standardized according to distance brackets: journeys up to 50 km will cost 30 UAH; 51 to 90 km - 55 UAH; 91 to 130 km - 75 UAH; 131 to 170 km - 95 UAH; 171 to 250 km - 115 UAH; and trips exceeding 250 km will be priced at 150 UAH.
Benefits of the Updated Fare Model
Ukrzaliznytsia highlights that this revised tariff framework aims to reduce financial losses from suburban transportation without significantly raising ticket prices. They explain, "Passenger transport in suburban networks faces serious challenges. Several local administrations consistently delay payments for subsidized travel. Rising costs for electricity, fuel, and other resources over recent years have further increased operational expenses."
The new structure is also intended to preserve existing suburban routes and stops while channeling additional funds toward repairing and modernizing suburban trains.
This six-zone fare system represents a crucial move to strengthen Ukrzaliznytsia's financial footing amid escalating costs associated with suburban rail services. Simplifying the fare arrangement should make travel planning easier for passengers by providing fixed prices. Over time, these changes are expected to enhance service quality and support infrastructure development in the affected regions.
As the new fare system is set to take effect, it is essential for passengers to stay informed about the implications of these changes on their travel plans.
