Ukrainian Railways to Run Historic Steam Locomotives for Constitution Day

Riding History: Steam Locomotive Trips Mark Ukraine’s Constitution Day

According to Главком: To celebrate Ukraine’s Constitution Day, Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) is organizing rides on historic steam locomotives as part of the first Summer Steam Weekend in 2026, held on the Haivoron narrow-gauge railway. This event, scheduled for June 27–28, promises to be a major attraction for railway enthusiasts and fans of Ukrainian culture alike.

For this occasion, Ukrzaliznytsia will put two historic steam locomotives into service:

• the oldest operational steam locomotive in Ukraine-model 159 No. 4-95, built in 1938,
• and the Er 798-71 locomotive, which was manufactured in 1954.

The event program will feature:

• traditional Ukrainian dishes,
• a cultural and artistic program,
• guided tours of the town of Haivoron,
• charity fairs in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Extra Carriages and Timetable

Additionally, Ukrzaliznytsia is adding extra carriages on the routes Kyiv–Haivoron, Lviv–Haivoron, and Odesa–Haivoron. Departures from Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa are scheduled for the evenings of June 26 and 27. Arrival in Haivoron will be at 8:00 AM, with return trips from Haivoron on June 27 and 28 at 8:40 PM, arriving the following morning. This event aims to draw a wide audience and support a vital initiative for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Summer Steam Weekend on the Haivoron narrow-gauge railway highlights the importance of preserving Ukraine’s cultural heritage and railway history. Moreover, the event demonstrates Ukrzaliznytsia’s active commitment to supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a cause especially relevant in today’s context. By blending cultural activities with charity, this project becomes meaningful for both the community and the country as a whole.

In addition to the exciting steam locomotive rides, Ukrainian Railways has also introduced an extra train service between Kyiv and Lviv for those looking to travel over the weekend. This initiative underscores the railway's commitment to enhancing travel options for passengers while celebrating significant cultural events across the country.
