The Growing Influence of Far-Right Parties Across Europe

According to ХВИЛЯ: More than eight decades after World War II, Europe is witnessing a notable resurgence of far-right political movements. This trend coincides with a heightened emphasis on national sovereignty and a declining collective sense of responsibility for historical atrocities. A significant example is Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which recently captured nearly 44% of the vote in regional elections-marking its first major breakthrough at this level. Despite this strong showing, AfD fell short of securing a majority or forming a coalition government. Meanwhile, in France, Marine Le Pen leads opinion polls just seven months ahead of the presidential election, and in the United Kingdom, Nigel Farage's Reform UK party is garnering support comparable to the Labour Party.

Driving Forces Behind the Far-Right’s Rise

The surge in far-right politics is fueled by several key factors:

  • Immigration challenges;
  • Shifts in the global geopolitical landscape;
  • Reduced American engagement in European affairs.

As geopolitical analyst George Friedman observes,

“migration inevitably generates social tension.”

Another critical aspect is the evolving political framework, where NATO-once heavily influenced by the United States to safeguard Europe-has seen its sway diminish following the collapse of the Soviet Union and Washington’s diminished focus on Western Europe.

AfD holds particular strength in the former East German regions, especially Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, advocating strongly against immigration. The party also adopts a more Russia-friendly stance compared to most German parties, calling for the lifting of sanctions on Russia. In Hungary, the political landscape shifted after Viktor Orbán’s loss of power, moving towards a more pro-European position, including the expulsion of roughly ten Russian diplomats. Orbán’s tenure was marked by skepticism toward both the European Union and the United States, with policies often viewed as anti-European.

Amid these geopolitical shifts, the United States is pursuing a permanent military presence in Poland, signaling a strategic pivot toward Central and Eastern Europe. Poland is simultaneously receiving substantial U.S. funding to bolster its arms production and is raising its defense budget. Germany is also increasing its military expenditures, preparing alongside Poland for emerging security challenges. Tensions between Poland and Russia persist, with Poland serving as a critical hub for U.S. strategic interests in the region.

This evolving environment marks a return to politics centered on national interests, a dynamic reminiscent of pre-World War II and Cold War eras. George Friedman highlights this by stating,

“Europe is reverting to an order dominated by national priorities.”

These developments reveal a shift in Europe’s political climate with potential implications for the future of regional integration. The growing appeal of far-right parties reflects not only domestic issues but also broader regional and global challenges-particularly those related to migration and security. The intensification of nationalist sentiment risks sparking new conflicts and complicating cooperation among European nations, underscoring the need for careful attention from international bodies and national governments alike.

The recent electoral success of the Alternative for Germany party in Saxony-Anhalt illustrates the broader trend of far-right parties gaining momentum across Europe. This victory not only highlights the growing discontent among voters regarding immigration policies but also reflects a shift in political allegiances, as traditional parties struggle to address these pressing issues. Understanding these dynamics can provide valuable insights into the future of European politics amidst changing global influences.
