Rustem Umerov’s Meetings with US Officials

According to Главком: On May 7, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov is scheduled to hold meetings with representatives of the US president. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received a briefing from Umerov that laid out the main objectives for the upcoming work. These include:

• a humanitarian track focused on launching a new phase of prisoner exchanges;
• stepping up diplomatic efforts.

Zelenskyy noted that Russia has so far shown no willingness to engage constructively on a ceasefire. He also stated that Umerov has been given specific security-related tasks concerning cooperation with the United States. The president expects a detailed report following the meetings, stressing the need for ongoing communication with the American side.

“We have defined the key tasks. First, the humanitarian track. We hope to carry out a new stage of freeing prisoners. Second, intensifying the diplomatic process. We are in constant contact with the American side and are aware of the partners’ relevant discussions with the Russian side. We are working to ensure this helps bring about a just peace and guarantees security. We see that even on the issue of a ceasefire, the Russian side, unfortunately, is not showing a constructive approach,” Zelenskyy said.

Umerov has arrived in Miami for a meeting with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff. There was also separate discussion regarding work with European partners on security agreements, particularly the topic of Drone Deals.

“We are preparing the agreements reached at the highest level and new steps in joint technological efforts. There must be more security. Thank you to everyone who helps! Glory to Ukraine!” the president emphasized.

A White House representative, for their part, declined to comment on the details of the upcoming contacts.

This meeting underscores the importance of close cooperation between Ukraine and the United States, especially amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
