Young Physicists from Ukraine Earn $250,000 for Olympic Medals

Students Honored for Physics Achievements

According to ХВИЛЯ: Entrepreneur Viktor Kurtev and Denys Shtilerman, co-founder of Fire Point, have awarded 10th and 11th graders who won medals at international physics olympiads. The initiative, dubbed Physics for the Future, aims to rebuild Ukraine’s deep physics and mathematics education system to support its rocket and drone industries. The total prize pool was $250,000, funded by Denys Shtilerman. This effort highlights a growing push to nurture technical talent in Ukraine amid modern industrial demands.

Ukrainian Students Compete on Global Stage

Ukraine’s national school team participated in three international competitions:

• The Nordic-Baltic Physics Olympiad in Tallinn
• The European Physics Olympiad in Gothenburg
• The International Physics Olympiad in Bucaramanga, Colombia

Most winners came from the Ukrainian Physics and Mathematics Lyceum at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Students from Lviv Physics and Mathematics Lyceum and the Richelieu Lyceum in Odesa also achieved top results.

Viktor Kurtev emphasized the significance of the students’ accomplishments, stating:

“Our team crushed it this year-not a single participant from any olympiad came home without a medal.” - Viktor Kurtev

He added, “Every medal our students earned is not just a personal victory. It’s proof that Ukraine has people capable of competing at the highest intellectual level. These are tomorrow’s engineers, designers, and scientists who will shape the future of Ukraine’s energy, defense, and high-tech industries.”

Kurtev also noted that “in the long run, nations don’t compete on natural resources. They compete on the quality of people they raise, support, and engage in their country’s development.” Thus, the Physics for the Future initiative not only recognizes talented students but also aims to strengthen the educational foundations for Ukraine’s future in science and technology.
