Overnight Drone Strike in Russia's Samara Region Hits Ozon Warehouse and Oil Refinery
Ukraine's Drones Target Russian Industrial Sites
According to ХВИЛЯ: In the early hours of August 22, 2026, Ukrainian defense forces launched drone strikes against several locations in Russia's Samara Oblast. The targets included the Ozon marketplace logistics hub in Chapayevsk and the Novokuibyshevsk petrochemical refinery. Fires broke out at both facilities shortly after the attack. By 7:30 a.m., flames had spread across most of the Chapayevsk complex, a site spanning 135,000 square meters. The logistics center, which opened in late October 2022, sits next to the Chapayevsk Mechanical Plant, a facility that produces industrial explosives.
At the Novokuibyshevsk petrochemical company, responders identified at least three separate ignition points. The plant processes more than one million tons of feedstock annually and produces a lineup of between 30 and 50 different products. It is Russia's sole manufacturer of synthetic ethanol and para-tert-butylphenol, and is located roughly 700 to 1,000 kilometers from Ukraine's border. The refinery had previously been hit by a drone on April 23, 2026, with that strike affecting the methyl tert-amyl ether production unit.
Escalation Across the Region
Elsewhere, explosions were reported in Saratov, and a port in Yeysk in Krasnodar Krai came under attack. In Russian-occupied Melitopol, a building of the seized Epicenter retail chain was hit. Meanwhile, annexed Crimea entered its third day of a complete blackout. Earlier drone strikes also targeted a refinery and a Wildberries logistics hub in Bashkortostan, leading to the shutdown of two Rosneft refineries.
The latest operation underscores Ukraine's expanding ability to strike deep inside Russian territory and reflects an escalation in its campaign against fuel, logistics, and industrial infrastructure. With strategically important sites affected and both sides weighing next moves, the situation could further reshape military planning and carry broader consequences for regional security.
The recent drone strikes highlight a significant escalation in Ukraine's strategy against Russian industrial capabilities. This follows a series of attacks on critical infrastructure, including a previous assault on a Russian oil refinery and logistics centers, showcasing an intensified focus on disrupting supply chains and fuel production.
