Strike on Orlivka International Crossing

According to УНІАН — Туризм: On the night of August 1, Russian forces used Shahed attack drones to hit the Orlivka international checkpoint in Odesa Oblast, located on the Ukrainian-Romanian frontier. The unmanned aircraft struck both the facility’s building and its surrounding territory, sparking fires that were later contained by emergency workers from Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS). The attack highlights the mounting pressure on civilian crossing points along Ukraine’s borders during the war.

As a result, the ferry service at Orlivka has been halted, and processing of travelers and vehicles at the checkpoint is temporarily suspended. Vehicles normally routed through Orlivka are being redirected to alternate border crossings. Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service (SBGS) has notified the neighboring side of the situation and urged people to factor this disruption into their travel plans abroad.

“Tonight, Russian Shahed-type strike drones attacked the Orlivka international ferry checkpoint on the Ukrainian-Romanian border. The drones hit the checkpoint building and grounds, causing fires. The blaze was contained by DSNS personnel.”

Earlier Attacks on Border Checkpoints

The recent attack follows earlier strikes on border crossings this summer, when Russian forces also targeted other checkpoints, including:

  • Vynohradivka
  • Tabaky

On the night of August 25, an attack on the Vynohradivka international checkpoint on the border with Moldova caused infrastructure damage and temporarily stopped the passage of people and vehicles. On August 21, Russian forces struck areas of Bolhrad and Izmail districts and infrastructure at the Tabaky international checkpoint, where fires also broke out. Traffic through Tabaky was halted for some time afterward.

These repeated strikes reflect a broader Russian military strategy aimed at destabilizing Ukraine’s border infrastructure. The ongoing shelling of crossings in multiple regions can severely disrupt transport links and people’s movements, making it critical for Ukrainian border guards and government agencies to respond quickly and ensure safety for people crossing the frontier.

The recent escalation in drone attacks has not only impacted border checkpoints but also caused significant disruptions in transportation across the region. For instance, following Russia's recent night strike, numerous trains have experienced delays, with some being held up for as long as 17 hours. This situation underscores the broader implications of the ongoing conflict on civilian travel and logistics. To learn more about the delays affecting train services, read our detailed report here.
