Farewell to Patriarch Filaret

According to Главком: Following the death of Patriarch Filaret in a hospital after a severe illness, Ukraine is observing significant ceremonies of farewell, the election of a new Patriarch for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC-KP), and preparations for his burial. Patriarch Filaret, who celebrated his 97th birthday on January 23, 2026, was hospitalized on March 9 due to a deterioration in his health. The farewell ceremonies are taking place amid profound emotion and remembrance of his contributions to the development of the church. The UOC-KP is one of the major Orthodox jurisdictions in Ukraine, which has been a central figure in the country's religious landscape.

The farewell for Patriarch Filaret took place on the evening of March 20 and throughout the day on March 21. The funeral service was held at the St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral, where Metropolitan Epiphanius conducted the litia. The Patriarch's burial is scheduled for March 22, 2026, at the St. Volodymyr's Cathedral, in accordance with his will. Simultaneously, a liturgy commemorating Metropolitan Epiphanius is ongoing at the St. Volodymyr's Cathedral.

Election of the New Patriarch

At an extraordinary session of the UOC-KP's Council of Bishops, held on the evening of March 20 and the morning of March 21, seven archbishops elected Archbishop of Sumy, Nikodim, as the new Patriarch. This moment marks a pivotal stage in the church's development following the loss of its leader. Politicians have also expressed their views on the transition.

Iryna Gerashchenko and Rostyslav Pavlenko noted: 'The best action in memory of the deceased Filaret would be the unification of the UOC-KP and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU).'
