Restoration of the Dormition Cathedral

According to Главком: The Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, which was damaged during a Russian Federation attack on the night of June 15, will be restored. The Government of Ukraine will provide financing for the reconstruction work. It has been noted that a decision will be made today to allocate funds from the reserve budget for the cathedral’s roof conservation and subsequent restoration.

The attack resulted in at least four deaths in Kyiv and nearly 30 injuries. During the incident, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex was hit, including a fire that broke out on the roof of the Dormition Cathedral. Sacred items and liturgical objects from the Lavra were evacuated to prevent further damage. The Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church issued a statement confirming the strike, underscoring the severity of the situation.

International Response and Funding

Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, participated online in a European Council meeting on June 15, reflecting active international engagement with the situation in Ukraine. As noted by Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister, Yuliia Svyrydenko,

“the restoration of the Dormition Cathedral and the necessary funding for it were discussed today with the president.”

She confirmed that the government will ensure the required financing for the restoration work, marking a critical step in preserving the country’s historical and cultural heritage.

Restoring the Dormition Cathedral carries both practical and symbolic weight for Ukrainian society. As a key part of the nation’s cultural legacy, its reconstruction can serve as a powerful emblem of resilience and recovery following devastating attacks. The allocation of funds from the reserve budget highlights the government’s commitment to protecting historical monuments and sustaining Ukraine’s cultural identity amid wartime conditions.

In addition to the restoration efforts for the Dormition Cathedral, the Ukrainian government is also prioritizing infrastructure improvements across the country. Recently, a significant allocation of 3.5 billion hryvnias was designated for regional road repairs, highlighting the administration's commitment to enhancing public safety and accessibility. This comprehensive approach not only addresses immediate restoration needs but also strengthens the overall resilience of the nation.
