Ukraine Expands Free Heart Medication Program with New Drug List

Broader Access Under the 'Affordable Medicines' Initiative

According to Главком: Starting in July, Ukrainians will gain access to additional heart and vascular medications at no cost or with a co-payment, following a decision by the Cabinet of Ministers to expand the 'Affordable Medicines' program. The updated formulary now includes 51 international nonproprietary names (INNs) for treating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions. This move comes as cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of premature death in Ukraine, making improved access to essential treatments a critical public health priority.

The National Health Service of Ukraine has published the complete list of newly included drugs. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko first announced the program update in April, with an effective date of July 1, after which the government formally approved the expansion to enhance patient options.

Medications Added to the Formulary

What does the updated list include? For preventing blood clots, the following agents will be available:

• Prasugrel
• Cilostazol
• Ticagrelor
• Edoxaban

To manage heart rhythm disorders, patients can receive:

• Mexiletine
• Propafenone
• Flecainide
• Sotalol

For heart failure and coronary artery disease therapy, the program now covers:

• Isosorbide mononitrate
• Ivabradine
• Eplerenone

Additionally, for blood pressure control, Ukrainians can obtain:

• Moxonidine
• Doxazosin
• Chlorthalidone
• Propranolol
• Nebivolol
• Nimodipine
• Lercanidipine
• Diltiazem

To lower cholesterol and prevent complications, the following are included:

• Rosuvastatin
• Ezetimibe
• Combinations of rosuvastatin with acetylsalicylic acid and colchicine

Modern combined formulations based on these active ingredients are also part of the list:

• Captopril
• Enalapril
• Lisinopril
• Perindopril
• Ramipril
• Valsartan
• Losartan
• Irbesartan
• Candesartan
• Telmisartan
• Olmesartan medoxomil
