Ukraine Allocates 518.3 Million UAH to Strengthen Backup IT Systems Following Russian Strikes on Data Centers

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: In response to recent Russian cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure, the Ukrainian government has approved a budget allocation of 518.3 million UAH from the state reserve fund to enhance the backup information systems of government agencies. Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky announced that these funds will focus on:

• developing geographically dispersed backup environments and sites,
• expanding cloud infrastructure,
• purchasing server hardware, software, and backup and recovery systems.

“We will invest in building separated backup environments and sites, cloud infrastructure, and acquiring necessary server equipment, software, and systems for backup and restoration,” Koretsky emphasized.

This initiative comes as a direct response to significant threats from Russian aggression. On September 23, Russian attacks damaged data centers operated by internet providers UTELS and Pavutina in Kyiv. UTELS reported power outages affecting key data center nodes, while Pavutina described the event as a major failure. Additionally, the Datagroup telecom operator’s data center sustained damage from Russian shelling.

The Security Service of Ukraine has also observed increased efforts by Russian intelligence agencies to produce fake websites and pages mimicking official government portals and Ukrainian media outlets. “We must prepare for various scenarios, including the worst-case ones,” Koretsky stressed.

The government continues to implement protective measures to safeguard the nation’s information infrastructure amid escalating threats.
