Free Hot Meals for Students Across Ukraine

According to Главком: Beginning September 1, the Ukrainian government will provide free hot meals to students in all grades. To support this initiative, 1 billion hryvnias have been allocated to upgrade 73 school canteens. The free meal program already covers grades 1–4 nationwide, as well as all children in frontline communities. This expansion reflects a broader effort to ensure every child has access to nutritious food during the school day.

Since early 2025, free hot meals have been available for grades 1–4, with the program also extended to students in grades 1–11 living in frontline areas. The next phase will roll out free meals for grades 5–11 across the entire country. According to Yulia Svyrydenko,

“the government has already begun preparations to implement the reform.”

Three Categories Under the Free Meal Program

Overall, the free meal program will be divided into three categories:

  • Students in grades 1–4 across Ukraine;
  • Students in grades 1–11 in frontline communities;
  • Students in grades 5–11 nationwide, set to receive free meals starting September 1.

The government’s initiative aims to improve the quality of children’s nutrition and ensure equal access to food for all students, regardless of where they live. The program’s importance is underscored by its role in social support, especially for children in frontline communities who may face additional hardships due to the ongoing conflict. By addressing these needs, the program is expected to positively impact students’ health and academic performance, supporting their overall development.

To enhance the quality of nutrition for students, the government is also investing in upgrading school cafeterias across the country. This initiative includes a significant allocation of funds, with substantial resources designated for kitchen facility improvements in 15 regions. Such efforts are crucial in ensuring that all students, particularly those in frontline areas, receive healthy meals and a supportive learning environment.
