According to Главком: During a nighttime attack by Russian forces, the Dormition Cathedral-a key structure within the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery complex-sustained severe damage. A direct hit struck the Stefanivskyi side chapel, triggering an intense fire that engulfed the cathedral’s upper section. Although firefighters managed to contain the blaze, the risk of structural collapse and further burning remains high.

The damage includes extensive destruction of the iconostasis and significant harm to the cathedral’s unique murals and frescoes. Particularly devastating is the impact on a section that had survived an explosion during World War II.

Consequences of the Shelling

The June 15 shelling of Kyiv damaged at least five nationally significant sites and several local landmarks. The Dormition Cathedral’s sacristy held unique artifacts originating from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and other monasteries. An exhibition titled 'Christ Is Risen' was successfully evacuated, along with the reliquary of Saint Stephen.
