Odessa Offers Complimentary Adaptive Motorcycle Training for Veterans

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: At the HelloMoto Odesa motorcycle school, veterans receive free adaptive motorcycling lessons tailored to their physical abilities, allowing them to learn how to ride despite mobility challenges. Founded in 2012, HelloMoto Odesa shifted its focus in 2023 to specialize in training programs for veterans.

This project is led by the HelloMoto Odesa public organization, which also customizes motorcycles for individuals with physical impairments. The school’s director, Sergey Sergienko, a combat veteran himself, organizes motorcycle trips including international tours. Their workshop has engineered specialized controls enabling people with amputations or limited limb mobility to operate motorcycles. Among the trainees is a veteran with both legs amputated.

Training Sessions and Veteran Motorcycle Journeys

The program is open to all veterans regardless of previous riding experience before the war. To date, 20 veterans have successfully learned to ride motorcycles. Sergey Sergienko explains:

"Anyone interested is welcome to join. We provide the motorcycles and training. Afterward, those who wish can decide on buying their own bike. Many of our students had never ridden a motorcycle before the war." - Sergey Sergienko

Recently, Sergienko and five fellow veterans completed a motorcycle journey through 12 countries in just ten days, including a trip to Switzerland. "We covered 12 countries in ten days," he notes.

Beyond the school, veteran Dmytro Mikhaleць launched a charitable motorcycle expedition called the 'Path of the Unbroken' from Lviv. This nearly three-week ride will span over 10,000 kilometers across 10 European countries, aiming to raise 500,000 hryvnias to purchase vacuum-assisted closure devices for wounded patients at the UNBROKEN rehabilitation center in Lviv.

In another inspiring example, Ukrainian veteran Ivan Drozd completed a 42-kilometer marathon in Chicago on October 11. This was his third race in the World Marathon Majors series.

The activities of HelloMoto Odesa and these veteran-led initiatives not only support physical rehabilitation but also foster social reintegration and boost self-esteem. Sergey Sergienko shares:

"I have titanium in my spine, and doctors still haven't removed all the fragments from my body. I understand war and the difficulty of returning to normal life. I speak the same language as the veterans who come to us. Motorcycles and a supportive community help rebuild confidence and return to an active lifestyle." - Sergey Sergienko

This initiative represents a vital step in assisting veterans recovering from war injuries and trauma. Adaptive motorcycling offers these individuals new skills and a community where they can share experiences and support one another. The training sessions and charitable efforts demonstrate the importance of providing veterans with opportunities to reintegrate and regain meaningful social connections after enduring significant hardships.

As initiatives like the adaptive motorcycle training for veterans gain traction, it's essential to explore how communities engage with veterans in various ways. One such effort is the recent launch of a coloring book aimed at teaching children about the importance of connecting with veterans. This project, initiated by the families of the Heavenly Hundred, not only fosters understanding but also encourages meaningful interactions.
