Birds are disappearing in Ukraine due to the war. Ornithologist named vulnerable species
According to glavcom.ua: Ukrainian nature suffers due to the war that continues on its territory. Ornithologists warn that military actions seriously affect birds, especially those living in steppe and forest-steppe zones.
Gennady Fesenko notes that steppe bird species suffer the most because of the war. The destruction of protective forest belts and constant explosions disrupt the habitat for many feathered creatures. This leads to radical changes in the landscape, which may threaten bird populations.
The fighting continues mainly in the steppe zone: Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk, Luhansk regions, partially in the Forest-Steppe - northern Kharkiv and eastern Sumy regions. Protective forest belts have long been established in the steppes, which contributed to the spread of forest birds. Now, in the forest belts, opponents can easily hide. Therefore, due to military actions, these plantations are often burned by both sides - by Muscovites and by Ukrainian troops.
Additionally, scientists note a significant decrease in bird nesting activity in the conflict zone. For example, in the Kyiv region during the occupation, there was a decrease in the number of stork nests due to the stress and noise of military actions. All these factors can lead to a serious decline in bird numbers and threaten biodiversity in these regions.
