What the 'White Diamond on Blue Background' Road Sign Means in the EU

According to ХВИЛЯ: Across the European Union, particularly in France and Spain, a distinctive road sign featuring a white diamond on a blue background is widely used. This sign designates lanes reserved for specific types of vehicles or for cars carrying multiple passengers. Typically placed on highways, multi-lane roads, and entrances to large cities, its purpose is to reduce traffic congestion and encourage carpooling.

Rules for Using This Sign

Vehicles allowed to use these lanes include:

  • public buses;
  • taxis;
  • emergency services;
  • cars with two or more occupants.

In some countries, electric vehicles are also permitted on these lanes. On the other hand, single-occupancy cars that do not meet the criteria are prohibited from using them. Automated cameras monitor the number of people inside the vehicle to enforce compliance.

France first introduced the white diamond on blue background sign in 2020. Violating the rules associated with this sign results in a fine of 135 euros in France and nearly 200 euros in Spain. In Ukraine, this road sign is not yet part of the national traffic code, which is an important detail for drivers planning trips to EU countries.

This sign is part of broader EU efforts to improve transportation infrastructure, reduce traffic jams, and streamline access to city centers. It is crucial for drivers traveling to EU nations to familiarize themselves with such signs and regulations to avoid fines and ensure safe driving. Given the growing popularity of shared travel, especially during trips, adopting this sign could promote more eco-friendly modes of transportation.
