Ukraine Sees 44% Drop in Water-Related Fatalities
Water Tragedy in Ukraine
According to ДСНС: Since the start of the year, 135 people have lost their lives in Ukrainian waters, including 10 children. Rescuers managed to save 74 individuals, 23 of whom were minors. Despite these grim figures, the number of drownings has fallen by 44% compared to the same period last year. This data was released by Viktor Vitovetskyi, Director of the Department of Civil Protection and Preventive Activities at the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
Vitovetskyi noted that 'while the trend is positive, the situation remains alarming, as every loss is a tragedy.'
Water Safety Guidelines
He emphasized that most accidents result from ignoring basic safety rules. It is crucial to remember:
- Swim only in designated and inspected areas;
- Never enter the water while under the influence of alcohol;
- Never leave children unsupervised, even for a moment.
Additionally, before entering the water, assess your physical condition and limits, avoid swimming too far from shore, and steer clear of dangerous games. If you see someone drowning, do not risk your own life without proper training-call for rescue services immediately. More detailed water safety information is available on the national security web platform.
The decline in water fatalities is a positive sign, reflecting the effectiveness of preventive measures carried out by rescue teams. However, the situation remains hazardous, and it is essential for citizens to follow basic safety rules to prevent tragedies. Ongoing public awareness campaigns and reminders about water dangers can help reduce risks and save lives, particularly among children, who are the most vulnerable during water recreation.
While the recent statistics indicate a significant decline in water-related fatalities, incidents continue to occur, highlighting the ongoing risks associated with water activities. For instance, a recent report detailed the recovery of a man's body from the Dnipro River in Kyiv, underscoring the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.
