700 Lynx in Ukraine Need Protection, New Count Reveals

Ukraine is home to the Eurasian lynx, a Red Book-listed animal whose population is estimated at just 600 to 700 individuals-a clear signal that conservation measures are urgently needed.

Protected under international environmental agreements, the Eurasian lynx is most commonly found in the Carpathian Mountains and the Polissia region, where natural habitats still exist. Ukraine has adopted a dedicated Action Plan for the conservation of the Eurasian lynx, outlining a series of steps to safeguard and restore the species' numbers.
