A dangerous American white moth spotted in Ukraine
According to glavcom.ua: An outbreak of a quarantine pest - the American white moth - has been identified in the Lviv region, which can damage more than 300 species of trees and shrubs. The affected area is located in the village of Didyliv of the Novoyarychevsky council, where quarantine measures are already in effect.
What is the American white moth?
This harmful species was introduced from North America. Its caterpillars feed on the leaves of more than 300 plant species, including fruit and ornamental plants. Female moths can lay up to 2000 eggs per season, leading to rapid pest proliferation.
How to identify and combat it?
Signs of infestation include webs on branches, a large number of caterpillars, and eaten leaves. To combat the moth, it is essential to cut and burn branches with webs, regularly inspect the plantations, and treat the trees with insecticides.
Local authorities urge the population to report any suspicious signs on trees and to immediately inform specialists to prevent the spread of the pest.
