Onion Prices Surge Across Ukraine as Old Stocks Run Low
Sharp Rise in Bulb Onion Costs
According to Главком: Wholesale prices for bulb onions in Ukraine are climbing rapidly as last year's harvest supplies dwindle and demand picks up. Local farmers are now selling bulb onions at rates between 5 and 10 UAH per kg ($0.11–0.23/kg). Over the past week, wholesale onion prices have jumped by an average of 19%. Despite this surge, current onion prices remain 68% cheaper on average compared to mid-May of last year.
Greenhouse Vegetable Market Dynamics
Agricultural market experts point out that price increases in this segment stem from a significant drop in 2025 harvest reserves held by domestic producers. Trading activity has picked up slightly, further fueling the cost rise. However, growers are uncertain whether they can continue raising prices, as the quality of stored vegetables is rapidly declining.
At the same time, Ukraine is seeing a steep drop in greenhouse cucumber prices. Ex-farm prices for greenhouse cucumbers are now substantially lower than during the same period last year. The main driver behind this decline is a seasonal surge in supply paired with weak demand. Wholesale prices for greenhouse tomatoes have also fallen by an average of 10% compared to the end of the previous workweek, with tomatoes now offered at 130–160 UAH per kg.
Overall, Ukraine's vegetable market shows mixed trends: rising costs for bulb onions on one side, and falling prices for greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes on the other.
These market shifts highlight the dynamic nature of Ukraine's agricultural sector, where supply and demand can shift quickly based on seasonal factors and product quality. With bulb onion inventories unstable, producers face challenges in storage and sales. Meanwhile, cheaper greenhouse vegetables could benefit consumers, but also signal the need for careful monitoring of market conditions and potential future price swings.
As the prices for bulb onions continue to surge, it's important to note that other vegetable markets are experiencing contrasting trends. For instance, while onion costs are rising, cucumber prices are falling, reflecting a seasonal increase in supply. This divergence highlights the complexities of Ukraine's agricultural landscape, where various factors influence market dynamics.
