Reports of Iatrogenic Botulism Emerging in Ukraine

These cases have been documented across three regions: Poltava, Kharkiv, and Khmelnytskyi. The Public Health Center of Ukraine advises individuals to seek treatment exclusively from certified medical professionals, verify the legitimacy of both practitioners and products, and promptly seek medical attention if any symptoms of botulism appear.

Ensuring Safety in Cosmetic Injections

Botulinum toxin, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, is widely used in aesthetic treatments to reduce wrinkles. However, safety is guaranteed only when:

• Certified and approved products are used,
• Accurate dosages are administered,
• Proper storage conditions are maintained, and injections are performed by qualified healthcare providers.

Use of counterfeit or substandard products, along with errors in storage or dosing, can lead to the development of iatrogenic botulism.

This year, Ukraine has already recorded cases of this serious complication. The price difference between reputable clinics and cheaper offers can be around 1,000 hryvnias. Treating botulism requires hospitalization, often in intensive care units, and administration of botulinum antitoxin serum, which costs approximately 230,000 hryvnias per dose.

The Public Health Center stresses the importance of confirming a physician's credentials before undergoing botulinum toxin injections. Patients should inquire about the packaging, product name, manufacturer, batch number, and expiration date.

Do not choose cosmetic procedures based solely on price; prioritize verifying the practitioner's qualifications, service licenses, and product details.
