Introducing the 'Talalam to First Words' Campaign

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Ukraine has unveiled the 'Talalam to First Words' initiative, a communication campaign dedicated to fostering early speech development in children up to three years old. This effort is part of the 'KRYTSIA: Support for the Recovery of Kryvyi Rih District' project and includes a free online platform packed with expert-backed exercises and guidance designed specifically for young children's language growth.

According to the Ukrainian Public Health Center, over 70% of preschoolers experience difficulties with sound articulation and sentence formation. The platform addresses this challenge by offering age-specific activities grouped into three categories:

  • Newborns to 1 year old;
  • From 1 to 2 years old;
  • From 2 to 3 years old.

Parents and caregivers can access the platform at https://childguide.com.ua/talalam.

Interactive Spaces and Key Developmental Signs

A standout feature of the campaign is an interactive area at the 'Prospekt Metalurhiv' rapid tram station in Kryvyi Rih. Large exercise decals and a tram-shaped interactive stand provide a playful environment where parents can engage with their children to encourage speech development. Project creative lead Ulyana Koynichenko noted, "At the 'Prospekt Metalurhiv' tram station, we've created a space where parents can turn everyday moments-whether running errands or waiting for transport-into valuable language-building playtime with their kids."

The campaign also highlights warning signs for parents to watch for, including if a child:

  • Does not respond to their name or sounds;
  • Does not use gestures;
  • Does not interact using sounds or words;
  • Does not understand simple requests;
  • Shows no new communication skills;
  • Loses previously acquired skills.

If parents have concerns about their child's speech development, consulting a pediatrician, speech therapist, or specialist is advised. Aliona Korol, the project’s leading expert on children with special needs and author of the exercises, emphasized, "Every child develops at their own pace, but certain signs should never be overlooked."

The 'Talalam to First Words' campaign aims to empower parents by integrating speech development exercises into daily routines. For instance, parents can use sound imitation during walks, breathing games at bath time, and simple descriptive language at mealtime. Korol advises, "The key is to avoid forcing children to repeat words or turning communication into a test-interaction should remain enjoyable and natural."

This initiative reflects growing awareness in Ukraine about the importance of early childhood development. As many families face challenges in nurturing their children's growth, accessible resources like this campaign provide essential support. Its interactive approach and expert-backed content offer practical tools for parents to nurture their children's language skills, ultimately contributing to improved overall physical and emotional well-being.
