The perpetrator, Mykola Pukach, has admitted his guilt and provided a detailed account of the murder. Investigative journalist Oleksiy Stepura, who has studied cases related to secret recordings from the office of then-President Leonid Kuchma, the Gongadze murder, and the poisoning of Viktor Yushchenko, suggests that Victor Medvedchuk may have been the mastermind behind the crime.

Stepura believes the killing was intended to implicate Kuchma.

“Stepura is convinced that Gongadze was killed solely to frame Kuchma,”

he states. He also points out that the murder was carried out deliberately during recordings in which the journalist’s name was mentioned. By the summer of 2020, Kuchma was reportedly preparing to dismiss Viktor Yushchenko from his role as Prime Minister, with Yuriy Kravchenko positioned to succeed him-Kuchma’s preferred candidate to eventually become President.
