Blind 'Demon Fish': Unknown Species Found in Underground Cave Under US Base
Underground Discovery: New 'Demon Fish' Without Eyes and Almost No Pigmentation (PHOTO)
According to Radiotrek — Світ: Recently, researchers discovered an unknown species of cave fish in Bobcat Cave, located beneath the territory of a US military base in Alabama. This cavity had kept its secrets for over thirty years. The new inhabitant has been named 'cave demon fish': it has no eyes, and its coloration is almost entirely absent. The body length does not exceed 5 centimeters, while a slight blue hue is noticeable on its skin.
This species is found only in Bobcat Cave and the associated underground waters.
The southern cave fish also inhabits the same cave. However, as scientists discovered, genetically these species are not close relatives: their external similarity arose as a result of independent adaptation to life underground, i.e., convergent evolution. Specialists fear that the new fish may be vulnerable to changes in water quality and pollution. Over the past two decades, increased levels of cadmium, chromium, and lead have been recorded in the cave waters.
Scientists plan to continue studying the new species to establish exact habitat locations and assess the population size. Material on this was published on August 18, 2026, at 06:20 in the New York Post.
This discovery highlights the importance of studying ecosystems threatened by pollution and other anthropogenic factors. It is worth noting for English-speaking audiences: underground water bodies often remain overlooked, yet they are among the first to respond to human activity. Such discoveries help us better understand how living organisms adapt to extreme conditions and may also contribute to the development of methods for monitoring water quality.
