In a study from the University of Iowa, scientists discovered that during such uncertainty, the frontoparietal cortex not only ramps up its activity but also rewires its communication with other brain networks. How the Study Was Conducted
To investigate this process, the team recruited 38 adults between the ages of 18 and 35. Participants learned to match colors, faces, and scene images with presses of a button using either their index or middle finger. The researchers then changed the previously learned pairings, creating conditions of uncertainty. The team combined behavioral records, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, and computer simulations to analyze the brain's responses.
This approach revealed that the frontoparietal cortex adjusts how it interacts with other regions depending on which signals are most useful at a given moment. Rather than responding the same way every time, the brain appears to selectively draw on different sources of information as circumstances shift.
According to study lead Kai Hwang, this area acts as a coordinator, helping the brain determine which inputs to request from other systems and how to blend signals coming from multiple sources.
The findings may provide a basis for future work on disorders such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and schizophrenia, though the study does not establish a direct mechanism for these conditions. This project is a continuation of the same team's earlier research, which was published in 2025.
Beyond the immediate results, the study demonstrates how combining neuroscience with psychological research can deepen our understanding of cognitive processes.
