A Fresh Approach to Finding Submerged Munitions

According to НВ — Техно: Scientists at the University of Miami have created a novel technique for spotting underwater explosives in shallow waters by merging NASA-developed tools with machine learning. This cutting-edge method underwent testing at the Broad Key test site, situated in the northern Florida Keys, where it proved capable of locating hazardous items effectively.

Study Outcomes

The findings from this University of Miami-led investigation appeared in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science. During trials, the team employed NASA innovations such as Fluid Lensing and MiDAR-a system that delivers multispectral imaging, detection, and active reflectance. Inert munitions and decoy objects were placed at two separate locations, with drones capturing the imagery.

The detection system successfully pinpointed every deployed target, even after weeks of sediment buildup had occurred. Active MiDAR sensing yielded the highest detection accuracy, marking a notable advancement in this field. Unexploded ordnance in waters less than 10 meters deep continues to pose a major global threat, according to Ved Chirayath, chair of Earth sciences in the Department of Oceanography and the study’s lead author.

The research also references the PFM-1 mine, nicknamed the 'Petal' or 'Butterfly', from the Soviet era, which highlights the ongoing challenge of underwater unexploded ordnance.

By leveraging NASA technologies and machine learning, it could become a vital tool in addressing hazardous remnants of past conflicts, promoting not only security but also environmental protection. For instance, researchers have developed drones capable of locating plastic landmines in Ukraine, showcasing the expanding role of innovative technologies in enhancing safety across various environments.
