Serhiy Ivanov of 'Iceland' YouTube Channel Joins Ukrainian Armed Forces Amid Deferment Scrutiny
Serhiy Ivanov Completes Military Training
According to Главком: Serhiy Ivanov, a co-host of the popular Ukrainian YouTube channel 'Iceland', has announced he has finished his basic military training and is now serving with a unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This move fulfills his stated desire to directly support the Ukrainian military effort.
“My support for the Armed Forces has evolved into direct participation over time. It is a great honor for me to be alongside all these worthy people,” Ivanov stated.
Details on Military Service Deferments
This development follows earlier reports from Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak, who revealed that both Ivanov and his co-host Volodymyr Petrov had received official deferments from military conscription through entities linked to the state. According to Zheleznyak's information:
- Serhiy Ivanov received a deferment in July 2025 from the limited liability company 'Startrek Industries'. Ivanov's deferment is valid until June 2026.
- Volodymyr Petrov was employed by the state institution 'National Military Memorial Cemetery' (NVMC) as a leading specialist in the communications and information technology department. Petrov's deferment was valid until January 21, 2026. Amid the ensuing controversy, Volodymyr Petrov submitted a resignation letter to the NVMC.
Consequently, both 'Iceland' channel hosts continue their active support for the Ukrainian military, whether through direct service or state-granted deferments. The issue of deferments has been a topic of public debate in Ukraine, often viewed through the lens of fairness and national mobilization needs. Ivanov's decision to join the military, despite having a valid deferment, highlights the complex personal and societal pressures many Ukrainians face during the ongoing war.
This news underscores the significant involvement of Ukrainian citizens in supporting their country's defense forces. While the process of obtaining official deferments has sometimes sparked controversy over potential privileges, Ivanov's choice to enlist demonstrates a powerful commitment shared by many to contribute directly to Ukraine's defense.
