Forest Fires in the Koriukivka Forestry District

According to Главком: As of May 12, a large-scale forest fire in the Koriukivka forestry district has been contained, though efforts to extinguish remaining hotspots continue. The blaze is estimated to have scorched roughly 5,800 hectares. While the fire is no longer spreading, the main ignition points are located within the Desna territorial community in Chernihiv district, where the burned area covers 350 hectares. The flames had been advancing toward the state border with the Russian Federation.

To combat the fire effectively, forestry workers established 129 kilometers of mineralized firebreaks. Weather conditions played a crucial role in containing the blaze, including lower temperatures, rainfall, and a southwesterly wind. As officials from the Northern Forestry Office noted:

“The fire has not been fully extinguished yet, but most importantly, its further spread has been halted.”

Authorities are calculating the total area affected using television monitoring systems, as some parts of the territory remain inaccessible. Foresters explained: “The screens show a grid of forest sections, allowing us to determine the area impacted by the fire.”

In addition to firefighting operations, specialists continue to stand watch at the sites and monitor the situation constantly. Key measures include:

  • extinguishing rekindled flames;
  • smoldering forest floor debris.

Forestry crews are actively working to suppress the fire and mitigate its aftermath.

Notably, during the firefighting efforts in the Exclusion Zone, a red-listed moose calf was rescued. This incident highlights the importance of foresters’ work in preserving the environment even under emergency conditions.

The Threat of Forest Fires

Forest fires pose a serious threat not only to ecosystems but also to public safety, particularly in border areas. The containment of the fire in the Koriukivka forestry district demonstrates the active efforts of foresters and emergency services in battling the blaze, which is critical for protecting the region. The preservation of natural resources and the protection of red-listed species, such as the moose calf, underscore the significance of environmental initiatives in the context of emergencies.
