2026 Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

According to Главком: U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance was met with boos from spectators during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Vance is leading the U.S. delegation, which also includes his wife Usha Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta. U.S. President Donald Trump was not in attendance. The incident highlights how major sporting events often become arenas for expressing political sentiments.

Ukraine's Representatives

During the Parade of Nations, Ukraine was represented by flag bearers Yelyzaveta Sydiorko and Vladyslav Heraskevych. The 21-year-old short track speed skater, Yelyzaveta, carried the Ukrainian flag at the San Siro stadium in Milan. She remarked:

“I didn't think I would be the one entrusted with carrying the flag. In Ukraine, there are many more famous athletes, but I am sure my father is proud of me – both for being here and for representing the country.” – Yelyzaveta Sydiorko

Yelyzaveta Sydiorko's father is currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Ukrainian flag was carried by Vladyslav Heraskevych, who is the first Ukrainian skeleton athlete in history. Earlier in the ceremony, spectators had also greeted the delegation of Israeli athletes with whistles. The opening ceremony, featuring participants from various nations, served as a significant event for the international sports community. The participation of Ukrainian athletes carries profound symbolism of resilience for a nation defending its sovereignty.
