According to Главком: Soldiers from the Shkval 7 unit of the Carpathian Border Guard Detachment in Kharkiv Oblast saved a chinchilla named Sonia, who had been abandoned by her previous owners during an evacuation. The animal was left in a settlement located almost on the front line of combat. In their haste, the former owners had opened her cage and left her behind. Sonia was discovered by soldiers from a cooperating unit and subsequently handed over to the Shkval border guards. This rescue highlights the often-overlooked plight of pets caught in the conflict.

Sonia's Living Conditions and Rescue

Chinchillas are delicate animals, intolerant of damp fur and sensitive to loud noise. Finding herself near the battle line was a source of immense stress for Sonia. Thanks to the soldiers, she is now safe. As representatives of the 7th Carpathian Border Guard Detachment noted,

"Everything is different for Sonia now. The shelter is dry, there is food, regular sand baths, and most importantly-care."

Soon, Sonia will be taken by a Shkval fighter who is traveling from Lviv Oblast to evacuate her to a safer and quieter location. For now, she is receiving special feed, seeds, and biscuits from the soldiers, which they jokingly refer to as her 'fees' for providing psychological support. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has previously shared photos of soldiers with animals, showing Ukrainian troops alongside cats and dogs.

Thus, through the efforts of the military, the chinchilla Sonia has been given a chance at a new life in more peaceful surroundings.

This incident underscores the humanitarian aspect of military service in Ukraine, where soldiers not only defend their country but also show compassion for animals in perilous situations.
