In Ukraine, there is a proposal to allow drivers with a category 'B' and over five years of experience to automatically receive the right to operate low-powered motorcycles without additional tests. The initiative has already been registered as an electronic petition. This is reported by Sud.ua.

What changes are proposed for drivers with a category 'B'

The author of petition No. 41/009952-26ep proposes to allow drivers of passenger cars to operate motorcycles with an engine up to 200 cc or a power output of up to 3 kW.

This concerns drivers who have an open 'B' category and at least five years of driving experience.

It is also proposed to automatically display the new driving right in the 'Diia' application after reaching the required experience.

Why Ukraine wants to simplify access to motorcycles

The initiative’s author notes that similar rules already exist in several countries of the European Union, including Poland, Spain, and Italy.

In his opinion, drivers with many years of experience already know the traffic rules well and can safely operate light motorcycles.

The petition also emphasizes that simplifying does not eliminate safety requirements:

  1. The vehicle must be registered;

  2. Drivers must obtain third-party liability insurance;

  3. The use of helmets will remain mandatory.

Separately, the author believes that such a change will help the development of urban mobility and reduce the burden on roads.

It should be noted that in Ukraine there are age restrictions for obtaining driver's licenses of various categories and fines for violations.
